The 2020 Community Voices grant will support the launch of an independent news website of bilingual (English, Spanish, and/or Portuguese) investigative stories in the form of articles and videos. Working in collaboration with Philadelphia Latinx, immigrant, and communities of color, each story will be culturally competent with rigorous journalistic standards to expand the coverage of diverse and timely stories told by and for the community.

The 2020 Community Voices grant will support “Report from the Future” a project to convene artists, designers, and community members to ask, “What does a Philadelphia look like that's designed for me?” Facilitated and curated by an “Afrofuturist-in-Residence” at The Village, the resulting multimedia responses will serve as reference points, learning aids, and lodestars for policymakers and stakeholders working to rebuild Philadelphia in the wake of COVID-19 and local and national uprisings for racial justice.

This two-year grant will support The Village's neighborhood-based media advocacy work through two initiatives: the Juvenile Justice Media Fellowship, and the Civic Power Studio's Media Justice Lab. Through amplifying the voices of local experts—those most affected by systems of injustice and misrepresentation—these initiatives work to reshape narratives and dispel myths, bringing often unheard voices to seats of power and driving positive change for the community.

Through this three-year grant, in collaboration with Free Press and Media, Inequality, Change Center, Movement Alliance Project (MAP) will convene and connect community-based organizations and local leaders in an educational and strategic visioning process that will lead to action-taking to reshape narratives around safety, trauma and violence. In this work, MAP and their community partners will center, support, and help cohere people impacted by violence and the criminal-justice system.
