Description

This one-year grant will support the ongoing building of a strong network of organizations working in youth media throughout Philadelphia, engage youth media content creators, provide platforms to showcase the voices and perspectives of these Philadelphia youth, and provide young media makers with professional development opportunities that will include training, mentoring and paid work experiences. This project will build upon the year-long Youth Set the Stage cross-collaboration begun in 2020 among nine youth media organizations across the city through the pioneering support of Independence Public Media Foundation’s Community Voices Fund.

The 2021 film grant will support "That's Why He Made Momma," a brother and sister turn the camera on their great-grandmother and her nine descendants in order to reimagine their legacy after America's latest recession. As the siblings sift through memory and place, they chronicle the ingenuity of generational single black motherhood and grapple with its inheritance.

The 2021 film grant will support "Talking Walls," an audio-visual oral history project centering the narratives of queer and Black elders. With record interviews and documentation of subjects who have resided in one location for 15 years or longer, The project will culminate into an experimental documentary film where queer elders discuss perspectives on home and personal sanctuaries.

The 2021 film grant will support "Spirit of 52nd," a hybrid/experimental moving portrait which incorporates non-fiction/verite documentary elements, archival scenes, and some minimally scripted/directed scenes. The film will treat 52nd Street—a once thriving Black business corridor in West Philly—as its main character, meandering between various stakeholders and memories, past and present, individual and collective.
