This two-year grant will strengthen the community-centered journalism projects in Germantown, in which residents are helping to create news coverage of issues important to their neighborhoods. Funding is designed to foster long-term sustainability and continuity through community staff positions, advisory groups, and the hiring of program alumni.

A one-year grant to continue the organization's work with the Shift the Narrative collaborative which helps build power in local communities by bringing together journalists and communities members to learn from and work with one another on collaborative reporting projects, with the goal of building lasting trusted relationships and creating community-centered processes and narratives within newsrooms.

This three-year grant supports Free Press' collaboration with Media Mobilizing Project and Media, Inequality, Change Center to organize journalists, newsrooms and community media allies to bring them into closer relationships with residents who want to take an active role in shaping local news. Free Press will also produce guides and workshops for constituents, support community-newsroom collaboration, and develop strategies to disincentivize the dominant “if it bleeds, it leads” newsroom mentality.

The 2020 Community Voices grant will support Facebook Live broadcasts staffed daily by Chester community locals to discuss critical issues facing the community, give voice to the residents, connect people with resources, provide health guidelines, promote community initiatives, and showcase the assets of this underrepresented neighborhood.

To amplify local voices in the City of Chester in Delaware County, PA, and fostering individual agency and collective social action.

This three-year grant will support Chalkbeat's efforts to merge with the Philadelphia Public School Notebook, a 25-year-old media organization founded by parents and concerned citizens, and create Chalkbeat Philadelphia, a new education news nonprofit.

To complete the merger between Chalkbeat and the Notebook.
