This one-year grant will support the ongoing building of a strong network of organizations working in youth media throughout Philadelphia, engage youth media content creators, provide platforms to showcase the voices and perspectives of these Philadelphia youth, and provide young media makers with professional development opportunities that will include training, mentoring and paid work experiences. This project will build upon the year-long Youth Set the Stage cross-collaboration begun in 2020 among nine youth media organizations across the city through the pioneering support of Independence Public Media Foundation’s Community Voices Fund.

For the “Outing” project which will search for Native children through investigative and solutions-based journalism, bolstering demand for a national accounting of Indigenous youths who went missing while under official supervision at dozens of government- and church-run boarding schools, with a special emphasis on the Carlisle Indian Industrial School in Pennsylvania.

To support and uplift residents of Philadelphia's Hunting Park community, a predominantly Latinx and African American neighborhood with one of the city's highest poverty rates, by engaging additional community members as contributors and editors for Impacto's Spanish-language publication.

To strengthen the news ecosystem in Delaware and increase voices and coverage of underrepresented communities, particularly BIPOC and low-income communities, by creating a pipeline of BIPOC journalists, identifying geographic and demographic news deserts, and building infrastructure to address news and information needs.

The 2020 Community Voices grant will support a five month pilot for Black and Brown youth using video, feature stories and podcasts to document and archive youth voices and experiences during the COVID-19 pandemic and the social uprisings in response to racist injustice and persistent state-sanctioned violence.

The 2020 Community Voices grant will support a information equity and community-driven storytelling project that will work in partnership with local journalists, media-makers, and residents in Camden to deepen community-newsroom relationships, equip residents with tools and platforms to share their experiences, and develop new strategies that address structural information inequities worsened by the COVID-19 pandemic.

This one-year grant will support the Philly Movement Media Fellowship program for young, primarily Black and brown writers and communicators.

To produce and disseminate media coverage around mass incarceration and COVID, to train journalists to cover this topic with nuance, to support emerging journalists who seek to tell these stories.

To launch TRACE, an ongoing reporting series that will track and inform how the Philadelphia region responds to the pandemic, economic crisis and structural racism. Grant support from a coalition of foundations (Lenfest Institute, Scattergood Foundation, Samuel S. Fels Fund, HealthSpark Foundation, and more).

Providing matching dollars to seven local newsrooms—NextCity, Hidden City Philadelphia, Spotlight PA, Prison Journalism Project, Delaware Public Media, WHYY News, WLVT News—in support of this year-end giving campaign.
