The 2020 Community Voices grant will support the “Johnson Park” project an exploration of the relationship between public art and power. A response to the uprisings and demands for removal of racist monuments throughout the nation, the project addresses how communities create memorials through a democratic and participatory process. Using audio-visual media to re-commemorate a public space in Camden that once depicted a racist frieze, Unmemorial will include a series of media projects that would create new and more ethical modes of commemoration that includes public critique and conversation.
Amistad Law Project (ALP) will use the 2020 Community Voices grant to amplify the voices of people in communities impacted by mass incarceration and policing. In response to the uprising, the project will highlight and promote the voices of directly impacted people in the work to create alternatives to policing and reimagine the institutions and practices that lead to safer communities. ALP will train community members to use media and media-making to tell their stories of safety and alternatives to policing such as unarmed first responders trained in de-escalation techniques.
The 2020 Community Voices grant will support the production of a collection of youth stories called “Voices from the Quarantine”. The book will contain more than 30 chapters of student writing about topics such as their experiences during COVID-19 and reflections on the racial justice movements occurring in Philadelphia.
The 2020 Community Voices grant will support “Report from the Future” a project to convene artists, designers, and community members to ask, “What does a Philadelphia look like that's designed for me?” Facilitated and curated by an “Afrofuturist-in-Residence” at The Village, the resulting multimedia responses will serve as reference points, learning aids, and lodestars for policymakers and stakeholders working to rebuild Philadelphia in the wake of COVID-19 and local and national uprisings for racial justice.
The 2020 Community Voices grant will support an intergenerational storytelling project aimed at preserving the oral traditional history of the African diaspora while facilitating communication and cultural exchange among young and elderly members of Philadelphia's African immigrant and refugee communities. In addition, the project will capture the stories and impact of COVID-19 on African immigrant frontline workers.
The 2020 Community Voices grant supports 2Puntos' collaboration with Philatinos Media to produce twelve stories about how the work, dreams, and goals of Philadelphia's Latinx community have been impacted by COVID-19. These stories will highlight how the community survives the challenges of COVID-19 from its own experience and Latino culture.
The 2020 Community Voices grant will support the creation of additional opportunities and support for community-based artists, activists, and scholars through Bulletin, a collaborative, web-based editorial platform for critically reading and reimagining public monuments through stories of social justice.
